What is B2?

Those reaching the B2 Advanced level should already have completed around 400 hours of learning and be comfortable with everyday use of the language. This should include regular and irregular verbs in all the active voice tenses, past, future, and conditional, all the main prepositional pronouns and the most common compound prepositions. B2 learners should have a good command of the case system, nominative, dative, genitive, and vocative. The B2 course focusses on understanding the natural language spoken by native speakers, their dialects and advanced vocabulary and grammar used for more complex or abstract topics. Like B1, the B2 course consists of a further 200 hours of learning and assessments are offered halfway through the curriculum, B2 Part 1 and on completion of the level, B2 Part 2.

B2 level (Part 2) candidates should be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with fluent speakers quite possible without strain for either party. They should understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialisation. They should be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
